Can you camp at Lone Pine Lake without a permit? Camping at Lone Pine Lake requires an Overnight – Mt Whitney Trail permit. Overnight Mt. Whitney Trail permit is reserved by the Mt. Whitney Lottery.

AmenitiesSwimming, fishing, water skiing, picnicking, boating, grills, fire rings, tables, vault toilets, play equipment. 100 spaces, 80-acre lake. Camping spaces are available for large RV’s. No shower facilities within the campground. No hook-ups. Limited water spigots are available throughout the campground. ATV riding is NOT allowed inside the campground.
ATV trails are located out the back gate of the campground. Six people allowed per site. Sites 44, 45 and 46 are group sites that accommodates 15 people. $35 per night.
Can you see Mt Whitney from Lone Pine?

How long is the hike to Lone Pine Lake?
We hiked to Lone Pine Lake in Sept. 2018 and Sept. 2019. Most reading about the distances learn it is around only 5.1 miles round trip (out and back) from Mount Whitney Portal. I used the app Endomondo. It recorded just over 3 miles to Lone Pine Lake sign. I went down to the lake and Endomondo recorded 7.22 miles round trip; without exploring the lake area. The hike has many switchback and it seems like it is longer than it actually is.
In Sept of 2018, the water crossings were pretty much a trickle. In Sept of 2019, the water was moving a little faster and there were 3 crossings. The 1st was slow moving, 2nd was a little faster and you needed to use the rocks or have the option of getting your feet wet, and the 3rd is the log crossing you see in many pictures.
