40 years after moving out of that house, I was with Lorraine Warren at a private screening of The Conjuring a few months before it was released. That day that she said to me that she was sorry, because she and Ed were in over their heads the moment they crossed the threshold of that house – they just didn’t know it yet.
But I will go to my own grave believing that they did everything in their power to help us, they just didn’t know how. In fact, it was on Ed’s deathbed that he begged his wife to tell our story in whatever way she could because he described their investigation of our farmhouse as the most intense, most compelling, most disturbing and most significant of all of the investigations that they ever conducted over more than 40 years as paranormal researchers.

But by 1974, when the Warrens were called in to investigate, the situation had become far more frightening. The five Perron daughters — the eldest of whom was Andrea — were even being awoken at 5:15 a.m. some mornings by alleged spirits, who smelled like rotting flesh and lifted the girls’ beds. The mother of the family, Carolyn Perron, reportedly researched the home and learned that it had once belonged to the same family for eight generations.
Chillingly, many children in this family had purportedly died in or near the house under strange and disturbing circumstances. According to Carolyn’s research, some of the children drowned in a nearby creek, others hanged themselves in the attic, and at least one was murdered.
Is The Conjuring timeline based on a true story?
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It generally follows the real-life timeline of the story upon which it’s based – that of Arne Cheyenne Johnson. It starts on July 18, 1981 with the exorcism of 11-year-old David Glatzel, which Johnson was present at. This is a slight alteration to the real-life story as, by this point, Johnson was already in prison for killing his landlord, Alan Bono.
Otherwise, the movie sticks to the real-life timeline, culminating in Johnson being convicted of manslaughter on November 24, 1981. Along the way, it takes a lot of creative licence with the reported true story though. The Nun II is out now in cinemas. Freelancer writer
What did Lorraine see in The Conjuring? However, the opening scene takes place at the infamous Amityville house, where Lorraine is drawn into a vision during a seance in which she directly encounters Valak for the first time and witnesses Ed being impaled. In Enfield, Lorraine eventually discovers that Valak has been behind the family’s haunting all along.
