What haunted house offers $20,000?

The haunted attraction , founded by Russ McKamey in San Diego, CA, has been operation for years, and still has a cult-following of loyal fans. McKamey refers to the experience as a tour, which is meant to last 10 hours, promising a $20,000 cash prize to anyone who can withstand the full experience. (Spoiler alert: no one has ever made it that far.) Each tour is tailored to the individual participating, playing upon their biggest fears and phobias.

Past visitors of McKamey Manor have reported leaving with broken bones, shaved heads, extracted teeth , and, of course, psychological trauma

How much does McKamey Manor pay you? So far, McKamey says no one has completed the tour, even though he promises to pay $20,000 to anyone who can sit through roughly 10 hours of this real-life nightmare.

“It’s legal because basically the people that are subjecting themselves to the McKamey program, or whatever you want to call it, they’re doing so voluntarily. That was one thing we went over at length with Mr. McKamey,” Lawrence County, Tennessee, District Attorney Brent Cooper told Nashville Scene . “Tennessee is a state where you can withdraw your consent at anytime. Even though someone may sign a really long consent form, if they ever indicate that they’re withdrawing consent, [McKamey] should take that seriously.

Because if the person really has withdrawn consent, and [you] continue to confine the person against their will, then you’re actually committing a crime.”

The tour lasts from eight to ten hours, but no guest has made it all the way through. McKamey originally did not allow safewords for the tour, [3] but has since reportedly allowed them, so guests have the option of ending the tour immediately. [5] The house operates year round, and there is reportedly a waiting list of over 24,000 people. [6] The newest iteration of the tour, a ten-hour experience called Desolation, offers a prize of $20,000 for successful completion.

McKamey deducts $500 from the prize for every failed challenge or use of profanity. [7]

Has anyone been injured at McKamey Manor?

How is it possible that such an aggressively hands-on experience could be legal? The owner, Russ McKamey, explains that while participants are led to believe they are undergoing tortuous treatment, such as waterboarding, it is all just “ mind game s.” Despite claiming the torture is a “mind game,” McKamey further acknowledges the most serious injury on site was a heart attack from which the participant recovered.

The owner furthermore openly admits that participants can leave with bruises, sprains, and cuts, but adds, “ you can die at Disneyland, too .”

Is McKamey Manor still open?

While Russ McKamey hasn’t specifically addressed the petitions, he has spoken out about his process, and claims there’s nothing illegal going on. “There’s no torture, there’s nothing like that, but under hypnosis if you make someone believe there’s something really scary going on, that’s just in their own mind and not reality,” he told The Washington Post . Is McKamey Manor still open? While the two petitions are pushing for McKamey Manor to be shut down, it is still open to this day.

They operate year-round and offer one show per week.
