What is the true story behind The Conjuring?
Millions of people have seen the films in The Conjuring franchise, but only a few know the backstory for the chilling tales. The Perron family of Rhode Island claims to have been terrorized by an evil paranormal presence while living at Arnold Estate, the house that inspired The Conjuring. Originally built in 1693, the home has a long, storied history of hauntings and terror, even up to the present day.
Perron and her family — five daughters in total, along with their mother and father — lived there from January 1971 until 1980.
Is The Conjuring timeline based on a true story?
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It generally follows the real-life timeline of the story upon which it’s based – that of Arne Cheyenne Johnson. It starts on July 18, 1981 with the exorcism of 11-year-old David Glatzel, which Johnson was present at. This is a slight alteration to the real-life story as, by this point, Johnson was already in prison for killing his landlord, Alan Bono.
Otherwise, the movie sticks to the real-life timeline, culminating in Johnson being convicted of manslaughter on November 24, 1981. Along the way, it takes a lot of creative licence with the reported true story though. The Nun II is out now in cinemas. Freelancer writer
