What does Ouija mean?

Etymology[ edit ] The popular belief that the word Ouija comes from the French and German words for yes is a misconception. In fact, the name was given from a word spelled out on the board when medium Helen Peters Nosworthy asked the board to name itself. When asked what the word meant, it responded “Good Luck.” [2] [10]

How do you pronounce the word Ouija?

The proper Ouija board as we know it today was invented by Elijah Bond in 1890, and marketed by William Fuld. The name “Ouija” originates with Charles Kennard, who owned the manufacturing company that originally made the boards. Kennard claimed to have been given the name by the board itself, and was apparently under the impression that it was an “ancient Egyptian” word meaning “good luck.” This is almost definitely nonsense.

Fuld standardized the name’s meaning in advertising, where he claimed (as many others have said) that it comes from a combination of two words for “yes,” the French oui and the German ja. By that logic, it’s roughly pronounced “wee-yah” (/wiːjɑː/). Given it’s basically a made-up word that got spit out by ideomotor automatic writing, you can probably pronounce it however you like.

Parents Need to Know Parents need to know that Ouija is a horror movie based on the official game by Hasbro. Lots of scary stuff is shown, including creepy ghosts screaming and charging at the camera, sudden noises, and jump-shocks.

Some of the teen characters are in relationships with each other, but there’s not much kissing. Language is infrequent, and there’s no drinking, smoking, or drug use. Hasbro is credited as the legal owner of the Ouija game, and Apple iPhones and laptops are shown. If the movie catches on with teens, it will only be thanks to the “so bad it’s good” factor

Kernel Rating (out of 5): MPAA Rating: PG-13 Length: 98 minutes Age Appropriate For: 13+. Lots of creepy stuff here—dark and shadowy rooms, the implied presence of ghosts, loud noises, creaky doors, an old house, a seemingly crazy old lady—but only a few gory things, like ghosts and corpses, a girl who is forced to sew her lips shut with dental floss, and a character drowning. None of it is so grotesque that it’s unforgettable, though; this movie really sticks within its PG-13 rating.

Also some cursing and teenage relationships. The board game-based ‘Ouija’ wants to deliver major scares despite a PG-13 rating, but the desire doesn’t pay off. The narrative is silly and contrived, and you’ve seen all these twists and scares before. By Roxana Hadadi
