Can you hike to the bottom of Black canyon?
Overall If you’re going to be climbing down into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, know that the routes are technical and can be dangerous. These routes aren’t for the beginner or intermediate hiker. If you’re on the Tomichi Route, I’d recommend having some climbing experience as there may be moments when this comes into play. I’d also recommend doing a better job than we did of keeping track of the return route – we tried, but it’s tricky.
Even closely monitoring landmarks wasn’t enough. If you end up opting for the Tomichi Route, like we did, it’s also important to make sure you bring plenty of water. The entire route is in direct sunlight. No pets are allowed on any inner canyon trails. Find more rules here .
